Encouraging behaviors...
Puppies actually learn from trying new things or testing out behaviors to see if
they are acceptable. How you react to these behaviors will be important to
their development. They watch and learn from your body language and voice. Did
you think it was cute and funny when your puppy destroyed your shoes? Two common
approaches to modifying their behavior is to immediately correct it, within 3
seconds of its
occurrence, or reinforce and praise the correct behavior
immediately after its occurrence. If you wait, in either case, the puppy will be
confused about what behavior you want them to exhibit. Puppies will learn
through your consistency in reinforcing their behaviors. During this formative
period, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Actively seek to
reinforce the behaviors you want your dog to have.
